Wokingham Borough Council is looking for a highly motivated and versatile Policy Officer, with great communication and analytical skills, to join its Economic Prosperity and Place team. The team has a large remit across a range of place-making agendas covering housing, climate emergency, economic development and arts & culture. Reporting to the Senior Specialist for Housing and Place-Making Projects, you will work across the wider Economic Prosperity and Place team supporting projects, programmes and strategies. Wokingham Borough Council has an ambitious agenda over the coming years. We are working towards sustaining economic growth as part of the Covid recovery plan for the Borough. We have declared a climate emergency and are working towards net zero carbon by 2030. We are also continuing to invest in a significant housing development programme across the Borough, providing more affordable homes and regenerating communities. This is a fantastic opportunity for people looking to gain early career experience in a dynamic and varied local authority policy environment.

Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject, you will have the flexibility to work across and provide support to the wider team while also taking ownership of particular areas of work. You’ll need to be a strategic thinker and a highly organised individual, with the ability to interpret complex information and data, communicating with a wide range of stakeholders and partners.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Help monitor and develop the Council’s place making strategies
  • Undertake research to inform strategy development and horizon scan for new national trends and introduction of government policies
  • Provide support on a range of projects within the wider Economic Prosperity and Place Team
  • Provide support on related bids for external funding
  • Provide written reports and briefing notes

Skills, attributes and experience:

  • A degree or equivalent in a relevant area
  • Good communicator (both written and verbal)
  • Good organisational skills
  • Ability to undertake research and analyse complex information
